I filled an enamelware pot with fall blossoms. The pumpkin books are easy to make when you tear the binding off an old book, and round the corners of the pages. I fluffed and ruffled them to get the dimension, and to make it stand better.<br />

<div style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;">
</div>
<br />
I attended a family reunion this summer near Princeton, Wisconsin. The town hosts a flea market every Saturday all summer, and crowds flock from miles around to the town square for the weekly festivities.<br />
<br />
Venders sell their crafts and fresh produce while shoppers wander the jagged aisles looking for treasure. But Princeton visitors don't need to wait for Saturdays to come around to find some fantastic treasures.<br />
<br />
I stopped in at two neighboring shops on the main thoroughfare through town and found a heap of fun stuff I would have bought if I had unlimited funds. If you're ever in Priceton, Wisconsin, I highly recommend you check out these two shops.<br />
<br />
The first one is <b>Needful Things</b>. Check out <a href="https://www.facebook.com/DebisNeedfullThings">Debi's Needful Things on Facebook</a> to see more pictures of the wonderful projects in progress at the shop.<br />

I love the whimsical style of the inventory of this shop. The hand-painting is one-of-a-kind.<br />
<br />
When I stopped in, this piece was in progress, and now it's finished:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I want it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The other shop I checked out was one I stopped at several years ago when I was in the area.<b> Huser Daddy Antiques </b>has made some great improvements at the shop. I loved it before, but now there were some cool brightly painted items and the pile of treasures outside has been organized and arranged. Love the changes! Find out more about the shop at the Facebook page for <a href="https://www.facebook.com/huserdaddyantiques">Huser Daddy Antiques </a>and have fun looking through the photos. </div>

What fun it is to stop in local resale shops. The next time you're exploring Wisconsin, be sure to check out Princeton...any day of the week. But especially on flea market Saturdays. </div>

Thanks to the shop owners for letting me scout around. I'll be back again, for sure!</div>

My dad used the pegs from inside the piano to make these tie and belt racks that can hang in the closet. It could also be used for jewelry or other decorative items. He drilled holes for the pegs in some of the scrap wood from the piano. </span><br />

If you've been following my recent posts, you've seen some of the projects my dad made from that piano when it was time to retire it from use. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The top of the piano was a long board with a hinge so that the piano could be tuned. My dad used that board, with the attached hinge and created this sofa table. He purchased the repurposed legs from a local salvage shop. Then, he stained them and a few other repurposed pieces to match the piano color. </span><br />

The legs are from original parts of the piano, and he used some other salvaged wood for part of the shadow box to contain the piano keys. You'll notice it looks different from <a href="http://trash2treasure.michellerayburn.com/2014/03/what-to-do-with-old-piano-upcycled.html">the one he made for my sister</a>, since each uses different parts of the piano.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The table legs are made from the front let, and also from the half-leg that was there for decoration on the body. My dad cut the back legs for my table from the body of the piano.</span></div>

This week, I'd like to show you a few other projects he created. The part of the piano where music would usually rest is a beautiful piece of wood with ornate trim. He turned it into a wall feature to be used as a photo ledge. </span><br />

My dad has gotten on the trash to treasure bandwagon and started creating his own projects. After trying to get rid of their big upright grand piano, my parents decided the only thing they could do was disassemble it and use the wood for projects. </span><div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I felt terrible about it, because it was the piano I grew up playing and it was still in working condition. But I had no place to put the beast! And neither did anyone else. So, imagine my happiness when my dad came up with this!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">When we moved out of our room and turned our son's former room into a master bedroom, we gained a guest room. I turned our old tiny bedroom into a guest room. When we lived in it, we could barely walk around the queen-sized bed with our two dressers in the room. Now, with a smaller bed I was able to create a pleasing and inviting arrangement.</span></div>

Have you ever considered how to prevent some of the water splashing around the kitchen sink. Outside of just skipping washing dishes, that is. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I repainted the kitchen, I had to repair some water damage above the sink, and I hate the puddle that forms when water runs to the side. So I came up with a pretty solution. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlVSocaVBoSTBQx6TLXl6uGb1elW1B-anltFhB0llxu0FlVALcR7AAtWsqu_fXVsb-fs-c2bOF74ir-wuibxzO7YAEFPTQtcpSGK4LYLYzaOpOZ1HRInGVd6VSBwWWxOgaTBsX7RZtZpRo/s1600/100_6258.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlVSocaVBoSTBQx6TLXl6uGb1elW1B-anltFhB0llxu0FlVALcR7AAtWsqu_fXVsb-fs-c2bOF74ir-wuibxzO7YAEFPTQtcpSGK4LYLYzaOpOZ1HRInGVd6VSBwWWxOgaTBsX7RZtZpRo/s640/100_6258.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
This ceramic plate fits behind the faucet, and within the stainless steel groove of the sink. Now, when I get carried away with the soap and water, it runs back into the sink. It's functional and pretty. There was a rectangle one at the store that I really wanted but it was three times the price. This one will do just fine. Yes, indeed.<div class="blogger-post-footer">Michelle

Once upon a time, I bought this piano bench at a yard sale for $1. I quickly stapled some fabric over the existing seat and used it for a while at the piano. But, then I upgraded to a nicer bench and put this one in storage. Until recently. See how lumpy it looks? I fixed that. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidpsjIbmAtBE4e5z8qn7x_8asVwiLkmROb9MuJaNNGHCRDQ6du2KrWyqRjB5lhaZSAKNbpbPsUFBhMx8lTJ0D8lP6qGFppoRPzgBS_b7yfmWYtT5ZIh5CN27vfFbA-29tRkGviZtSZ3Zo7/s1600/100_6302.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidpsjIbmAtBE4e5z8qn7x_8asVwiLkmROb9MuJaNNGHCRDQ6du2KrWyqRjB5lhaZSAKNbpbPsUFBhMx8lTJ0D8lP6qGFppoRPzgBS_b7yfmWYtT5ZIh5CN27vfFbA-29tRkGviZtSZ3Zo7/s640/100_6302.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
I wanted a footstool for when I sit in my bedroom in the wicker chair, but it had to be very small. Skinny enough to fit between the bed and the chair. So, I chopped about 6 inches off each leg on the bench, took took it apart, and took it outside to give it some spray paint.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxwGfOvYpHrDdXbwl9_hk7j-LLn2NZKof5NkBJGxT6hB86p9BP4Z2Nav-7g9_9SUTI6wBPV2tgP4EQtIz9SCxLD_gSIW1PtENAc1hGANklmNZsx7iQs1T3TaquSSqCCkmYyk8WVjEZeVan/s1600/100_6317.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxwGfOvYpHrDdXbwl9_hk7j-LLn2NZKof5NkBJGxT6hB86p9BP4Z2Nav-7g9_9SUTI6wBPV2tgP4EQtIz9SCxLD_gSIW1PtENAc1hGANklmNZsx7iQs1T3TaquSSqCCkmYyk8WVjEZeVan/s640/100_6317.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
I painted a black base color and sprayed a crackle finish over the top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicuVTCqob1NPhvWBlrY2qh-KW0uVhyphenhyphenq1E8LedRBU2aXgnhQhu7cluusBuSfSeBefJ6R7Osk1UIjHQIDBjLWaIk7fS-kqK6bmoYyoct2M26P4hX1kt5rA0Fc7MrFfIiJtGlEu6xNpY7LVH7/s1600/100_6318.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicuVTCqob1NPhvWBlrY2qh-KW0uVhyphenhyphenq1E8LedRBU2aXgnhQhu7cluusBuSfSeBefJ6R7Osk1UIjHQIDBjLWaIk7fS-kqK6bmoYyoct2M26P4hX1kt5rA0Fc7MrFfIiJtGlEu6xNpY7LVH7/s640/100_6318.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpjJv65S_nD4OP3yx1lIOXJsabKVZXDdJm-c5QuTTjM2gB2u2sjroaukOW7IpYFP7ngH4pHEGXGVGMJXfF8ynkDbSXpuVb5RUpBGRaRpKZ0cb83cvmNcutCQchApxixOc85MGEBmFkXTYy/s1600/100_6319.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpjJv65S_nD4OP3yx1lIOXJsabKVZXDdJm-c5QuTTjM2gB2u2sjroaukOW7IpYFP7ngH4pHEGXGVGMJXfF8ynkDbSXpuVb5RUpBGRaRpKZ0cb83cvmNcutCQchApxixOc85MGEBmFkXTYy/s640/100_6319.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
Then, using some foam from an old couch cushion (the couch was tossed long ago, but I saved the foam), I added new padding. I also used a scrap of decorator fabric from my stash. Anyone who sews always ends up with a stash of pieces.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT9iGUrOEfmaa9XiweZqdHXDw8iBHDa2pO1CEwTELlpVjrzuyoM6lTz1y73eRksX1v-undfVMqb3kUcw8Js1ljKx_if-H2cLdVoy0FEvWcRw_L-jUjOpEsUC6mSQ1BVpqokfB4IL1rPafa/s1600/100_6320.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT9iGUrOEfmaa9XiweZqdHXDw8iBHDa2pO1CEwTELlpVjrzuyoM6lTz1y73eRksX1v-undfVMqb3kUcw8Js1ljKx_if-H2cLdVoy0FEvWcRw_L-jUjOpEsUC6mSQ1BVpqokfB4IL1rPafa/s640/100_6320.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
After I stapled the fabric around the seat, I drilled two holes in the board and poked a long needle up through, snagged a button, and poked back down through the hole. Disclaimer: it was easier said than done.<br />

That gave it this tufted look and ensured that the cushion foam would stay put better.<br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">When I did my<a href="http://trash2treasure.michellerayburn.com/2013/11/transformation-teusday-paneled-bedroom.html"> bedroom makeover</a>, there was this corner that I just didn't know what to do with. Yes. I am a writer and just ended that sentence with a preposition. I am waiting for the grammar police to come take me away.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The TV has to stay here. Maybe someday, we will afford a wall-mounted flat screen. Maybe some generous sponsor will send me a TV for review. Hah. But in the meantime, my husband likes having a TV here. So, I was trying to figure out what to do with this blah corner. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> I had these mirrors from our old bedroom and had painted the frames in sort of a white pickled look. I never really liked the frames that way, but liked having mirrors. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">When I did my desk makeover, I needed something for the wall. In my trash to treasure stash, I had some vintage windows that I had made into chalkboards. I decided one of those would be just the thing. So this blah space...</span></div>

I loved it just as it was, but didn't have the right place for it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivwNDCrDNCV39hd7HoiF2k4jupQsr8IfyFbhF9vZgUj-h2U2gxqSh05hsH5jPd9vh70HSdafUpbARmuWva7tqy7m3VrPGrtLLt8t38lCChrwI3QwMR4fOOKIG4VxF9EHDsguG03qOAbJE-/s1600/100_6262.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivwNDCrDNCV39hd7HoiF2k4jupQsr8IfyFbhF9vZgUj-h2U2gxqSh05hsH5jPd9vh70HSdafUpbARmuWva7tqy7m3VrPGrtLLt8t38lCChrwI3QwMR4fOOKIG4VxF9EHDsguG03qOAbJE-/s640/100_6262.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
But what I really did need was something to decorated these old skis. I had removed the sorry pine bough that was on it before because it was getting shabby.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp_XXAV08VM-TdYsFEFfLeSGV2cmvGWNt-l3kmXRW3DwcsflX_Pej0ov2J90siGS2EzhnCokQW9kSvEhxKg3QJRFfoZIXf5baLruO9rWstlKY3X1yeJLPhEySBbJhLncs0LZd0YbKeLOTC/s1600/100_6260.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp_XXAV08VM-TdYsFEFfLeSGV2cmvGWNt-l3kmXRW3DwcsflX_Pej0ov2J90siGS2EzhnCokQW9kSvEhxKg3QJRFfoZIXf5baLruO9rWstlKY3X1yeJLPhEySBbJhLncs0LZd0YbKeLOTC/s640/100_6260.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
I twisted the garland into the shape of a circle. Then I used floral wire to hold it in place.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib0_Fr4icQ29p9r4cVH2XByT8yXJZIZRxkeMDQp3JpH0GYklA89TVutOCac0ijakgRa3CC6L3p8j-4bhsFTf34FIrxXxaKYItgg2kqJqhoGOQAssoxVEFLii6g2ykxkp6mWUPZAJMOsJTH/s1600/100_6264.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib0_Fr4icQ29p9r4cVH2XByT8yXJZIZRxkeMDQp3JpH0GYklA89TVutOCac0ijakgRa3CC6L3p8j-4bhsFTf34FIrxXxaKYItgg2kqJqhoGOQAssoxVEFLii6g2ykxkp6mWUPZAJMOsJTH/s640/100_6264.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
Then, I hung it on the skis.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg35H0-2UmY2hUv6hweaoTu6M0yEhLYPohTV22-goSr2VF8m3gjRCvsmxb0wGVS1Z9sxAYpr8M7bw3RU0qqB7ulCMPH620Ile-KO4N94bYfGGncQs52qOEpJn3ZbMuurBnzLdd6DDPP5-5n/s1600/100_6265.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg35H0-2UmY2hUv6hweaoTu6M0yEhLYPohTV22-goSr2VF8m3gjRCvsmxb0wGVS1Z9sxAYpr8M7bw3RU0qqB7ulCMPH620Ile-KO4N94bYfGGncQs52qOEpJn3ZbMuurBnzLdd6DDPP5-5n/s640/100_6265.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>

After all, it didn't work for a computer at all, and it was old and SO beat up from belonging in my son's room during his growing up years. I also thought about listing it on Craigslist to give it away, but then when I didn't have the immediate funds to purchase a replacement, I considered a different plan. It's nice and solid, which leaned in favor of keeping it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Here is what it looked like when I hauled it into the workroom:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0a9cG3TJTVzLqBpJp-Bk82jqfHc5we1pxbAECVtoeynA8Xgl2AJjpqnS_aJrqXl1FGV5Up-iZ38albLpfYdISowuSvdVle63H3FmDmRkBsVCLWJLTUYKjGADZ3XIB7sKWi-oiosEw5ceD/s1600/100_6296.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0a9cG3TJTVzLqBpJp-Bk82jqfHc5we1pxbAECVtoeynA8Xgl2AJjpqnS_aJrqXl1FGV5Up-iZ38albLpfYdISowuSvdVle63H3FmDmRkBsVCLWJLTUYKjGADZ3XIB7sKWi-oiosEw5ceD/s640/100_6296.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> I love the size of the drawers and the pull-out work boards on the sides, but it was in awful shape. My parents purchased the desk years ago from a prison auction, and it had an intricate system for locking the drawers. I removed all of that hardware. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxq6J_QhTcUdFs4bSWk76x4ceW0ib4V5F_YwOJAocpH1NfRIu4pMgy5SWgXDBxgimV6PWslmQz1Ok8cQQmnzJCE9IVsdytWIYVzOXTmngruBLFJlmAKnfpstvwZ9-jiLlPVwt1HbRWHwK1/s1600/100_6298.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxq6J_QhTcUdFs4bSWk76x4ceW0ib4V5F_YwOJAocpH1NfRIu4pMgy5SWgXDBxgimV6PWslmQz1Ok8cQQmnzJCE9IVsdytWIYVzOXTmngruBLFJlmAKnfpstvwZ9-jiLlPVwt1HbRWHwK1/s640/100_6298.JPG" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> My son built a lot of models at this desk. Thus, the paint all over the top.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I found a desk that totally inspired me on Pinterest, and used it as my inspiration. I had enough leftover paints on hand to complete the project, meaning it cost me nothing!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Here is the inspiration desk from<a href="http://missmustardseed.com/2011/04/painted-desk/"> Miss Mustard Seed. </a></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> I cut out the framework around the drawers on the right side, and then installed a board in the bottom so that I had a place for the tower. Then, I primed everything with BIN 123 primer that works on glossy surfaces.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">One final close-up of the finish. I spray-painted the existing hardware with an oil rubbed bronze finish. Again, it was the budget-friendly option, since I had the paint already. Recognize the blue color on the desk? I mixed leftover paint from my<a href="http://trash2treasure.michellerayburn.com/2013/11/transformation-teusday-paneled-bedroom.html"> bedroom makeover </a>with a lighter color to get this shade.</span><br />

I've been busy with a lot of transformation projects lately, and it's time to share some with my readers. The biggest fall project has been transforming my son's bedroom into a new master bedroom on a shoestring budget. Our son left for college several years ago and seldom is home, so he took a smaller room, and we moved into his old room, which was considerably larger than our 11 foot by 11 foot room. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The room had one big problem. It was paneled on all surfaces, including the ceiling. We considered drywalling, but didn't really want to spend very much right now. We had already replaced the windows a few years ago, and the carpet as well. So, what I really needed was to figure out what to do with that paneling. I decided to just paint it, figuring that if we every have more money down the road, we could go the drywall route. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I primed everything with a good BIN 123 stain-blocking primer. I will talk about paint techniques in a future blog post, but for now, it's important to know that I gave the walls two coats of primer and two coats of paint.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the room before, in its limbo state after my son moved out. It was sort of a guest room, but not an inviting one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Gotta love that paneling, huh? Yikes! It isn't the only room that came this way with my house.<br />
<br />
So, ready for the big reveal? I chose a retro color and went with an eclectic vintage look.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoc6_-7VeKY0PaE0ZVfO8PmjAyelGfjFzP5LbNq8aept0NgfZiRNHplN68kLRDvoFuwin6hbjVojtW9PTDlRBkHhl5cNHYbv-6GFtw02Pf-3hYDHF9t3wNwV42kCR994E5G-_QFL2V9two/s1600/100_6268.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoc6_-7VeKY0PaE0ZVfO8PmjAyelGfjFzP5LbNq8aept0NgfZiRNHplN68kLRDvoFuwin6hbjVojtW9PTDlRBkHhl5cNHYbv-6GFtw02Pf-3hYDHF9t3wNwV42kCR994E5G-_QFL2V9two/s640/100_6268.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
I have a quilt started (who knows when I will finish it) that will coordinate with the room color. For now, I had to use the old, not-so-matchy one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNOM9PYFTNqr8tGWuAiFvL4PVv3e1zkXW5xZao6gbsJ19io7HvOL6MLOEc05UHgNZddloObNzFkCCk8UCDDHD2zFzu2wE4pjUC4rpfClwxbKPsyEzVrGwZhjuxvIfHWPe-txi_S39ycPQk/s1600/100_6269.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNOM9PYFTNqr8tGWuAiFvL4PVv3e1zkXW5xZao6gbsJ19io7HvOL6MLOEc05UHgNZddloObNzFkCCk8UCDDHD2zFzu2wE4pjUC4rpfClwxbKPsyEzVrGwZhjuxvIfHWPe-txi_S39ycPQk/s640/100_6269.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
I created a little reading corner with wicker furniture I found at a yard sale.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0s0LeMqERJiHbT_tfCR0fbAC_D8T-BoQpr_y7b4izDInJYr6hyphenhyphenE97bA8FwesqjherMsdatScsaXnINb31hnmMxGeIW71mhk0NjgO9LnH77kJPkJQA1rEJYbft6EXSHsuO3eWEB2r46rW5/s1600/100_6270.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0s0LeMqERJiHbT_tfCR0fbAC_D8T-BoQpr_y7b4izDInJYr6hyphenhyphenE97bA8FwesqjherMsdatScsaXnINb31hnmMxGeIW71mhk0NjgO9LnH77kJPkJQA1rEJYbft6EXSHsuO3eWEB2r46rW5/s640/100_6270.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
Someday, maybe I will do something to this dresser. I bought the set years ago as kit furniture that we assembled. The pine is dated, but I can't bring myself to paint it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The old French door hung sideways by the hinges is a repurposed project I did a while back. I panted chalkboard paint over the glass on the bottom and put paper behind the glass on the top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I bought some cheap nightstands off Amazon to have something with storage. They were lighter in color than I expected, but I can live with them for now. The totally ugly light switch that came with the room is going to go as soon as I get to the hardware store. And, unfortunately the ugly thermostat stays.<br />

I kept the original wooden blinds for the sake of budget and just added some cheap white sheers. The entire transformation with paint, new trim, and a new ceiling fan was right around $200. Not too bad. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgphY1g59EJ3BrQE-JyMPTFdkILP9RqI-kq-mJ8KcGKqfflB203DbranaHAT_3rsS8cZIwtrEs9dL30OK_scOBf2QoAp9RN3zZUrjAdONPLFgQztQSoCkSMxC4JJkjflg_bQPUyZlYx5kKc/s1600/100_5972.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgphY1g59EJ3BrQE-JyMPTFdkILP9RqI-kq-mJ8KcGKqfflB203DbranaHAT_3rsS8cZIwtrEs9dL30OK_scOBf2QoAp9RN3zZUrjAdONPLFgQztQSoCkSMxC4JJkjflg_bQPUyZlYx5kKc/s640/100_5972.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
The chest had a very worn surface, and was missing some veneer on the lower leg part.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsPc56HB_949Q3yKc1Wj53lvwMuSSJZOYk8x9-LYSTyA4opTotTV3aFKcJNq_1NonGQNkveM78EOua78t2GirfB_BweRedZbLtalmMtuNr0aI-ILTLwVDw2lkpQL3oEJR4oxXhyphenhyphen6Qd75VK/s1600/100_5974.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsPc56HB_949Q3yKc1Wj53lvwMuSSJZOYk8x9-LYSTyA4opTotTV3aFKcJNq_1NonGQNkveM78EOua78t2GirfB_BweRedZbLtalmMtuNr0aI-ILTLwVDw2lkpQL3oEJR4oxXhyphenhyphen6Qd75VK/s640/100_5974.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I liked the texture of the trim and the detail work. But I knew that whether I painted it or removed the finish, I would lose some of the detail.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhWoaP8gYJi5THppxOgjUGmfFyAPrMrmMu3ZTPx8Ao4OcI4bq0S72UfAwDe61_sgFlFkYY3fkKGzIWUYYQc2IBdwpJH6H3Z6O06mp8MJRzFr9sIlhBGUyAmU_k3mqSJo-u8uuZahYCAlrx/s1600/100_5977.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhWoaP8gYJi5THppxOgjUGmfFyAPrMrmMu3ZTPx8Ao4OcI4bq0S72UfAwDe61_sgFlFkYY3fkKGzIWUYYQc2IBdwpJH6H3Z6O06mp8MJRzFr9sIlhBGUyAmU_k3mqSJo-u8uuZahYCAlrx/s640/100_5977.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
Because of the missing veneer, I decided painting would be the best finish.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRlCZKTU6NtQwOEmLbttnFf5L9i6Itvv80wlh6IXAtcQQ9h78z1-ONCf7MISh9KeXb-UAioUNoSrM3kiRPeYnu_pX8wvvFV3O77T2sIXa-6qhvwxSsR1YpKAoPzSEa70CVn36_Ec8mO7ko/s1600/100_5979.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRlCZKTU6NtQwOEmLbttnFf5L9i6Itvv80wlh6IXAtcQQ9h78z1-ONCf7MISh9KeXb-UAioUNoSrM3kiRPeYnu_pX8wvvFV3O77T2sIXa-6qhvwxSsR1YpKAoPzSEa70CVn36_Ec8mO7ko/s640/100_5979.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
And because of this damage too...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

First, I primed everything with a bonding primer. I like Bin 123 latex primer, but Kilz and Bullseye work well too.<br />
<br />
Then, I coated it all with latex satin paint in a pecan color.<br />

When it's all done, I will coat it with a few layers of poly. That could be water or oil-based. I also like to coat with a layer of Minwax finishing wax when everything has cured. It gives it a smooth, nonsticky finish.<br />

You can do as much or as little on the glaze as you wish. I haven't had a chance to do the poly yet, so I'll post a pic when that's complete.<br />
<br />
I had all of the paints in my stash of leftovers, so the project cost me nothing but time.<div class="blogger-post-footer">Michelle

What do you do with old books?<br />
<br />
Recently, I spoke for a women's event and gave a presentation on trash to treasure decorating. Here's a shout out to the women at Cornerstone Church in the Twin Cities!<br />
<br />
For a craft session, one creative gal taught us how to make a pumpkin from an old book. How fun!<br />
<br />
This one is made from an old hymnal. First, we ripped off the covers. That felt naughty. Then we started cutting the pages. Even naughtier. I had to cut a few pages at a time, but here is the finished shape.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-m3xC9rKdNaXxFDYXoCpk_7nDHpcJahtjQJcPJBcA8TnYEPjn53LQOuvxk76GSAo12ZZcx1ra69NkXjbNKPl2poJP-cybxxjz6A_Lt2jssaHhxjvKP2LN_wANue4nRdPX8-srCtrjPsOa/s1600/100_6294.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-m3xC9rKdNaXxFDYXoCpk_7nDHpcJahtjQJcPJBcA8TnYEPjn53LQOuvxk76GSAo12ZZcx1ra69NkXjbNKPl2poJP-cybxxjz6A_Lt2jssaHhxjvKP2LN_wANue4nRdPX8-srCtrjPsOa/s640/100_6294.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
It doesn't really matter how perfectly identical your pages are, as long as they are sort of similar. Then, I roughed up the pages a little...meaning I sort of crumpled them a little. Then using an ink pad, I rubbed a little burnt orange ink on the edges of the pages. And colored the spine with brown marker to look like a stem.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT1qSa1WaLxyOrQjJX-stAEnyipPyUoG-ilk05uHCo2gnqcBqGrBe8BeYfCSI7JlACpU4bGwcaBrfy4RT0FYPySJRuK48qJNFAYk8Kvu1X3RAxw6_maBN8PqZ6xjjHzHhD_T0AlCTJv8IE/s1600/100_6295.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT1qSa1WaLxyOrQjJX-stAEnyipPyUoG-ilk05uHCo2gnqcBqGrBe8BeYfCSI7JlACpU4bGwcaBrfy4RT0FYPySJRuK48qJNFAYk8Kvu1X3RAxw6_maBN8PqZ6xjjHzHhD_T0AlCTJv8IE/s640/100_6295.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
And when I stood it up and fanned it out, it looked like a pumpkin. I glued on two silk leaves at the top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjmrMyxJjPmwnQ2mjQcSrekbdPjutemN-b5IiqUYfAFy_PSmg2l4c2BmobMcZTGgr0TWARQVuvxft6vibchQgQ8WFGbFK5pKZWpDf6dFALmg8fmSV8_rwpgx1kXTnbsO5Hn2zi8tDgIpP_/s1600/100_6292.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjmrMyxJjPmwnQ2mjQcSrekbdPjutemN-b5IiqUYfAFy_PSmg2l4c2BmobMcZTGgr0TWARQVuvxft6vibchQgQ8WFGbFK5pKZWpDf6dFALmg8fmSV8_rwpgx1kXTnbsO5Hn2zi8tDgIpP_/s640/100_6292.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
I decided to put it on a shelf and have just half a pumpkin. You could rough the pages more to make it full enough to bring the two edges together and make a whole pumpkin, or use two books put together. </div>

What a fun trash to treasure project for fall! With different sizes of books, you can make all sizes of pumpkins. And at my class, some of the ladies spray-painted theirs with a light mist of orange spray paint to make them more festive. I decided I liked mine more white. If you cut them right, you could probably make apples from smaller books too.</div>

I finally got around to doing something with it.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisP7Fisp2YyUzBvTE4dU5t9qb1M-LtagEXuJicnN9_lCWgPPpCVYZ74ZpJGUbg2gOYmzVKkLA4l_Fu0roUQRvQzadZKAZ3qI9rdUwAT03C4-TLsILBKpHrYdBJ7zvM2bR4_hm9rCCUvf1F/s640/Lamp7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisP7Fisp2YyUzBvTE4dU5t9qb1M-LtagEXuJicnN9_lCWgPPpCVYZ74ZpJGUbg2gOYmzVKkLA4l_Fu0roUQRvQzadZKAZ3qI9rdUwAT03C4-TLsILBKpHrYdBJ7zvM2bR4_hm9rCCUvf1F/s640/Lamp7.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">My friend wanted help giving it a makeover, but the stipulation was that it had to stay a lamp. There were very good reasons for why she wanted to honor her mother-in-law for thinking of her in picking it up at a yard sale for her, but she also wanted to make it into something she liked. My job was to come up with something that would make her fall in love with it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I tried stripping the paint to see what was under it, but it did nothing but create some rust. Maybe the solution was too old, as it was in my basement for years. Either way, I washed it off and decided to paint it in a oil rubbed bronze (ORB) finish. I had some ORB spray paint, but not enough, so I coated it in Rustoleum black. Then I gave it a spritz of copper paint all over, and finally a thin coat of the ORB. This stretched my on-hand materials farther. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I stuffed some paper in the light sockets to keep paint out of them. Then, I poked some office supply fastener clips into a cardboard box and painted them with the spray pain too. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEIC7oSe1Jgdkv52xq30BgBNxOChSbuXy2CSIW9ggB7HWuiNmDAkWB3u-91cIIcndnlR3mPjS58zl0Eb0tcy1OXUIBl-mhscrUDI2KN0151gP8gPFs2kuFMZfMBGVsgRRasOT65glCUB9e/s1600/Lamp+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEIC7oSe1Jgdkv52xq30BgBNxOChSbuXy2CSIW9ggB7HWuiNmDAkWB3u-91cIIcndnlR3mPjS58zl0Eb0tcy1OXUIBl-mhscrUDI2KN0151gP8gPFs2kuFMZfMBGVsgRRasOT65glCUB9e/s640/Lamp+10.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Now, for what I planned to do with these supplies.I printed some 4x6 photos onto laser transparency film. It's just from the office supply store. I have a color laser printer, and knowing that the laser film can withstand the head of laser printing, I thought it would be perfect. I trimmed the photos down to 3x6 because this would fit over each opening in the lamp. The lamp has holes in the metal on surrounding the opening, so I got the idea to punch holes in the printed pictures and then fasten them to the lamp with the office fasteners (you know, the kind with the little metal wings you bend outward on the back). </span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAW9g00Y1Te_Y2WNEBe79GLF0KToTEutawwnXGFMHi11Kifmr025_MUiH5n3ZPs6-VKe4RdNdgXSX4tgK3oCQamotl235-W_M2fsPn1b_rfjy2rVhi5Qfup1zR9LA3_DpO1z44CeTM18PF/s1600/Lamp+11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAW9g00Y1Te_Y2WNEBe79GLF0KToTEutawwnXGFMHi11Kifmr025_MUiH5n3ZPs6-VKe4RdNdgXSX4tgK3oCQamotl235-W_M2fsPn1b_rfjy2rVhi5Qfup1zR9LA3_DpO1z44CeTM18PF/s640/Lamp+11.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> I hung up the lamp and turned it on for a while to test it and see that the projector film doesn't get too hot. No problem. All of the heat of the lamp goes out the top. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> It kind of has a neat effect of projecting the pictures onto the wall. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> I chose pictures I knew would be special to my friend. Her soldier son, her first grandchild, the other children, her husband, and both of their mothers. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfN7ACIsRWNEb-xl3LNaEuTLt4I73LKQbmSGM2zAlvzgpW_hhVCsHLqgWYdU2a-gQhT0noh2LKFHRsotliGymZWcjbev1hWPmvTcvMOfBK3dEQ8-geJEIa50eYl2GXkY1pZ9mTvaHRSeVg/s1600/Lamp+17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfN7ACIsRWNEb-xl3LNaEuTLt4I73LKQbmSGM2zAlvzgpW_hhVCsHLqgWYdU2a-gQhT0noh2LKFHRsotliGymZWcjbev1hWPmvTcvMOfBK3dEQ8-geJEIa50eYl2GXkY1pZ9mTvaHRSeVg/s640/Lamp+17.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Thing is, the lamp still isn't outstanding. There's only so much one can do. But my friend choked up when she saw it, and said she loves it. I think it's because it has all of the people she loves on it. The best part is that the photos can be changed out easily down the road. Or removed completely. </span><div class="blogger-post-footer">Michelle
